The Junction House: Crafted Modernity

Project Stats

  • Location: The Junction, Toronto

  • Year: 2024

  • Role: Construction Management (via Canfield & Co) & Lead Design/Build

  • Architect (Permit & Specs): Denegri Bessai Studio

  • Interior Styling: Kessler Zakkai Real Estate

  • Photography: James Doty

The Context: A Collaborative Transformation Set in Toronto’s historic Junction neighbourhood, this project involved the revitalization of a classic red-brick semi. The goal was to modernize the layout for contemporary living while respecting the existing fabric of the street. This project was a collaborative triumph, bringing together architectural vision, interior styling, and precise construction management.

The Build: Managing the Details Acting as the Construction Manager (on behalf of Canfield & Co), Doty Design Studio bridged the gap between the permit drawings and the site reality.

  • Layout Optimization: During construction, we identified opportunities to improve the flow, including adjusting the second-floor layout to capture space for a new, much-needed ensuite bathroom.

  • Technical Execution: We managed the complex integration of modern systems into the Victorian shell, ensuring that the architectural specifications by Denegri Bessai Studio were executed with precision.

The Maker’s Touch: Bespoke Millwork While the shell was a collaboration, the joinery was a singular focus of our studio. We designed and fabricated the custom millwork that defines the interior character.

  • White Oak Palette: We utilized rift-cut white oak throughout to create warmth against the clean white architectural backdrop.

  • Functional Sculptures: The stair guard isn't just safety code; it’s a design feature. We crafted a custom vertical slat system that filters light through the levels while maintaining visual transparency.

  • Integrated Storage: From the entryway bench to the floor-to-ceiling bedroom wardrobes, every cabinet was built in-house to maximize storage in the tight urban footprint.
